Lane sworn in as New Braunfels police chief

New Braunfels has a new police chief after city council members unanimously confirmed the appointment of Keith Lane to the post during its Monday meeting. The selection of Lane, who had been serving in an interim capacity since late last year, comes following a nationwide search by the city, assisted by the Keller-based executive recruitment firm of Strategic Government Resources. A field of 62 candidates from 15 states — including 35 from Texas — was narrowed down to four finalists who visited New Braunfels this week for in-person interviews and tours of the community and meetings with officers and employees at the police department, according to City Manager Robert Camareno.

Girl Scouts honor teachers through cookies

WADESBORO As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, the Anson Girl Scouts Troop surprised teachers and staff with a sweet treat on May 3. Anson Girl Troop 1389 delivered boxes of cookies to the teachers and staff of Anson Middle School as part of organizations Cookies for a Cause program. Eighth graders Jessica Laney and Za’Kiyah Hixson and seventh grader Cheyenne Hassel helped deliver the cookies to the school. “Committed to giving back to the community, Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council has always had a strong cookie donation program,” Girl Scouts Leader Laura Laney said in an email. “In the past, the focus has been on military efforts, through Cookies for the Troops, but in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts selling cookies, cookie donation was expanded to include a local focus to hometown heroes (fire, police and first responders) and local charities/nonprofits.”

Local business owners said they’ve seen a huge difference when it comes to customers purchasing items for their mothers this year compared to last year. In the days leading up to Sunday, Susie Carroway at Alene’s Florist and Justin Kezar at Grandough Baking Company said business has been nonstop. “We’ve had probably double our walk-in traffic,” Carroway said. “Our sales have been wonderful. A lot of fresh floral vases. We’re selling a lot of our gift items to go with it.”
