Outgoing senate parliamentarian reflects on 13-year tenure

News By Isha Trivedi May 10, 2021 12:25 AM Former Faculty Senate Parliamentarian Steve Charnovitz said his final senate meeting late last month was a “depressing” end to his 13-year stint in the position. Charnovitz, who started teaching at GW in 2004, has held the position of senate parliamentarian longer than anyone else in the senate’s history. As his tenure has come to a close, he said he feels the senate has “wasted” time on resolutions to question University President Thomas LeBlanc’s leadership abilities rather than advise University leaders on policies to help navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and a changing higher education landscape.

News By Yankun Zhao May 10, 2021 9:49 AM The Faculty Senate passed a resolution Friday permitting online voting at regular or special Faculty Assembly meetings. The resolution states that members of the assembly, which is open to all faculty with full-time faculty serving as voting members, may be considered “present” and therefore qualified to vote if they’re virtually in attendance at a meeting permitted to be held online. The vote responds to concerns raised at the last assembly meeting in November when faculty needed to suspend a rule that only permitted voting rights if members attended the meeting in person.

University of Maine at Presque Isle Hosts 112th Commencement Two hundred and three students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 8, during the University’s Virtual Commencement Ceremony held to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2021 despite a public health situation that still precludes large, in-person gatherings. This is only the second time in UMPI’s history that a commencement has been held virtually. During the 112th Commencement ceremony, UMPI President Raymond Rice conferred degrees for the 2020-2021 academic year upon this year’s graduating seniors, who had the opportunity to participate in the ceremony via UMPI’s Youtube channel.

CU president Kennedy to resign this year – BizWest

Registration is open! In a statement, Kennedy said he and the CU Board of Regents have begun discussions for an “orderly transition” after new members joined the panel. Kennedy did not say when exactly he may be leaving, or who would fill in for him if the Board of Regents were to begin a search for a new chief executive. However, Kennedy’s contract is due to expire in June 2022. “I appreciate the many smart and dedicated people who work hard every day to help the university meet its mission to serve its students and the state. CU is on a positive trajectory,” he said in a statement.
