Kolkata, May 7 : The Bharatiya Janata Party won 77 of the 292 seats in the recently concluded Assembly elections in West Bengal, way below the expectations of the party that was eying to wrest power from the ruling Trinamool Congress in the state.
But there is more that might bother the saffron brigade, which used all its resources in the run-up to the high-octane elections in its bid to breach the Trinamool citadel in Bengal.

The special task force (STF) of the state arrested three suspected peddlers after a large consignment of “yaba” tablets worth around Rs 60 lakhs was seized from them in Malda on Monday night.
Police sources said altogether 1.70 lakh yaba tablets a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine were seized from the trio, all residents of Murshidabad, from Baishnabnagar police station area in Malda town.
The estimated price of the seized consignment is around Rs 60 lakhs, the police sources said.

New Delhi: The eighth and final phase of voting is being held in Bengal today amid the growing menace of Covid that is spreading fast in the state. The election is being held on 35 seats lying across Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Kolkata.

Six seats in Malda, 11 each in Murshidabad and Birbhum and seven seats in Kolkata are voting in this phase. Polling is being held across 11,860 centres. The voters will choose among 283 candidates, 35 of whom are women.
Two ministers Shashi Panji and Sadhan Pande - are seeking re-election in this phase. All eyes are on Birbhum district, which has a history of poll-related violence.

The daily surge of coronavirus reached a new high in Bengal today, with the state logging 17,403 fresh cases - up from 17,207 over a 24-hour period on Tuesday. The number of fatalities was also the highest, with 89 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate has climbed from 6.79 per cent ten days ago to 7.81 per cent.
While Kolkata has always been the epicentre of the disease in Bengal, today s data from the state health ministry showed that North 24 Parganas has surged ahead with 3,912 cases. In Kolkata, the number was 3,901. North 24 Parganas recorded 21 Covid deaths while the number in Kolkata was 23.
