D65 parents discuss hybrid learning launch

Just a week after her twin sons started remote learning last spring, Dara Ury said she knew one of them would need to return to his Chute Middle School classroom as soon as possible.  On Thursday, he stepped back into the Chute Middle School building for the launch of D65’s hybrid learning model. His twin is staying remote. Ury’s son going in-person has an individualized educational plan and a 504, a plan that ensures he receives needed accommodations.  “I think that all of the ‘Return to school or don’t return to school’ is a very personal decision,” Ury said.

School district, teachers reach tentative agreement to bring more students back to classrooms

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: February 19, 2021 Superintendent Gustavo Balderas After weeks of negotiations, the Edmonds School District announced Friday its bargaining team struck a tentative agreement with teachers that would bring more students back to classrooms by the end of March. In a letter to families, District Superintendent Gustavo Balderas said the district’s bargaining team has reached a tentative agreement with the Edmonds Education Association which represents the district’s certified teaching staff to open classrooms to kindergarten, first- and second-grade students as well additional special education and early childhood programs. According to Balderas, this Stage 2 re-entry plan will begin March 22 with second graders.

Biliteracy seal honors grads who excel at foreign languages

Carol Feingold/Correspondent Last June, when Sofia Juste graduated Newburyport High School, her diploma featured a little something extra the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL) a new distinction awarded to students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. “The program was piloted in the state for two or three years before it was opened to public schools,” Assistant Superintendent Angela Bik said. “We had to meet requirements and make a commitment to administer the assessments and communicate with the community. We applied in the fall of 2019, and 2020 was our first spring.”
