A council leader has warned residents to stay local and not make any unnecessary journeys while on holiday in the Maldives.
Angie Dale, leader of Richmondshire District Council, penned a joint message with police and fellow councillors to warn people against travelling for exercise because of surging Covid cases in North Yorkshire.
The call was made on Friday but was immediately seized upon by opposition councillors who described her actions as disappointing after it emerged she was on holiday in South Asia at the time it was issued.
Mrs Dale has been photographed enjoying cocktails on the sun-drenched Maldivian island of Kudahuvadhoo with her husband Richard (below).

Angie Dale, leader of the local authority at the heart of Chancellor Rishi Sunak s Richmondshire constituency, spoke as Covid cases rise sharply in the area governed by her council.
In a press release on Friday January 8 she warned: It is vitally important that people heed the stay local message.
At that time Mrs Dale and her family were enjoying the crystal waters of the Indian ocean from a beach on the Maldivian island of Kudahuvadhoo.
