Most people wouldn t have heard of Fastly or CDNs until thousands of websites including Amazon, Paypal and Reddit were brought down for almost an hour on Tuesday.
As is the way with infrastructure, we don t tend to think about it until something goes wrong.

What happened?
On June 8 at 11:47 CEST, users of sites including Amazon, Reddit, many news websites and even government web services were met with a 503 error message.

These major websites were inaccessible due to an issue with the content delivery network (CDN) of Fastly, an American cloud computing service provider. Fastly said it was investigating the impact of its CDN services and an hour later, it applied a fix. But what is CDN and why is it important for functioning of the Internet?
Major media and government websites, including the White House, The New York Times, Reddit and Amazon were temporarily down on June 8 after being hit by a global outage blamed on a glitch from cloud computing services provider Fastly. The widespread outages around 1000 GMT also hit the UK government website, CNN and the BBC before resuming services more than an hour later.
