Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi says it’s time to look at alternatives to prison.
The Waiariki MP came under fire this week from Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis for his support for rioting Waikeria prisoners.
He stands by his actions, and says a judgment this week on the inhumane treatment of two wāhine in Auckland Women’s Prison shows the system is absolutely broken.
He says with the majority of inmates both male and female being Māori, it’s time for iwi, hapū and Māori communities look at alternatives to incarceration.

Press Release – JustSpeak
Justice advocacy group JustSpeak is calling on Minister Davis to show leadership and focus on his commitments to meaningful change in Corrections policy, following his accusations against Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi and People Against Prisons Aotearoa yesterday.
“Minister Davis needs to take responsibility for the systemic failures in Corrections facilities across Aotearoa and demonstrate his Government’s commitment to actually making change, rather than attempting to deflect attention from the human rights abuses happening on his watch” said JustSpeak Director Tania Sawicki Mead.
“Just yesterday, Judge McNaughton’s interim ruling made clear that women at Auckland Women’s Regional Prison were subjected to degrading and inhumane treatment, as well as excessive use of force.

Prison abolition group People Against Prisons Aotearoa is defending a newsletter praising the actions of rioting prisoners who burned down part of Waikeria Prison.
In parliament yesterday Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis said the newsletter encouraged prisoners to riot, and called out Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi, who involved himself in the Waikeria incident as a mediator.
PAPA spokesperson Emilie Rakete says the issue of the Take No Prisoners newsletter promoted non-violent organising. What we re doing is telling people they have rights. The crown even acknowledges people inside have rights so we are telling our whānau inside what those specific rights are and advising them of some courses of action that can be taken if those rights have been violated, she says.
