The 50-year-old building closed again on April 3 for air quality testing. Auckland Libraries said that testing had now come back clear and had been peer-reviewed and validated by an air hygienist, who also works with WorkSafe. Library users could be assured there is no risk to their health and safety, the blog post said. Repairs to the roof are expected to last until the end of 2021. It will be replaced to restore its waterproof layer, which involves breaking off the concrete surface, then grinding away the old waterproof membrane. Meanwhile, Auckland Libraries said research services will operate from level one for the foreseeable future, while some community programmes have moved to Ellen Melville Centre in Freyberg Square and some services have moved online.

The Central City Library is closed, from 6pm on Thursday 1 April, until further notice.
The building is currently undergoing work to repair the roof, which is impacting on the air quality within the building. Our focus is on public health and safety so library staff have made the difficult decision to keep the library closed for the time being.
If you wish to visit a library in the meantime, please consider heading to one of our other branches. To find the branch most convenient for you, visit the Auckland Libraries website.
The library was temporarily closed in late March following a precautionary evacuation and air quality issues within the building, also associated with the building works.

If my week goes AWOL and I can’t get there, I’m then too ashamed to go in.” To make matters worse, the library passed some of her debt to Baycorp, which relentlessly pursued her for a fine worth about $50, she says. The stress of it has put her off libraries altogether and now she gets her reading fix through e-books or bookstores. “After I paid off my debts I banned myself and just don’t borrow books now. I don’t even know what other services they offer, as I just don’t go.”
