Lakeland commissioners appear to favor police body cameras, will explore cost to purchase

LAKELAND  Lakeland officials have all but indicated they would be in favor purchasing all new body and in-vehicle dashboard cameras for the Lakeland Police Department.  The commissioners decision to move a step closer to purchasing cameras was undoubtedly influenced by the positive experiences shared by Chief Jeff O Dell, of Kissimmee Police Department, and Lt. Allan Kolak, of Cape Coral Police Department during a meeting last week. Anytime [officers] are out in public we want body cameras on, Odell said at the meeting, which was held Friday morning. Part of selling it was highlighting positive interactions.   The Kissimmee Police Department will share videos of its officers stopping to help community members - like fixing a child s bike - on social media, according to Odell.

Lake Wales will purchase body cameras for city s police department

“Adding these 24 cameras will equip, really, all the officers that regularly interact with the public,” City Manager James Slaton said.  Lake Wales Police Chief Chris Velasquez said the first training session for implementation of the city s body camera pilot is scheduled for May 27. The city s officers will go live with the body cameras later in the summer.  Initially it sounds easy to buy body cameras and set it up, Velazquez said. We have to make sure we have sufficient hands-on training. It seems like an easy task. It s something that needs to be practice and muscle memory for it to become effective.

Rockford City Council considers $3 4 million for police body cameras

The money would be spent over five years. It would cover the cost of purchasing 320 body cameras, replacing 120 dashboard cameras and installing the needed equipment and software to extract, store and utilize the mountains of digital data the cameras will produce. Berke told aldermen in a memo that a team assembled to review proposals from three companies ultimately chose Scottsdale, Arizona-based Axon Enterprises, the same company that provides body cameras for the Winnebago County Sheriff s Department. Axon provides a state of the art camera system and digital storage system used by police agencies all over the country, Berke said in the memo.
