Final score: Mets 7, Pirates 6—How Conforto got his groove back

Final score: Mets 7, Pirates 6 How Conforto got his groove back Share this story Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports The first inning was the story of today’s game, as all of the Pirates offense came in that bottom half of the first. Taijuan Walker, fresh off his All-Star game appearance, didn’t have it today, only able to get one out in the top of the first before being pulled after six runs crossed the plate. Walker wasn’t helped by an absolutely bizarre play where, with the bases loaded, a ball in foul ground was called fair after it just barely touched the foul line, and the call was made as Walker swept it towards the dugout. In the confusion before the ball was corralled back to the field of play three runs crossed the plate on that play alone. The rest of the pitching staff in the game today stepped up their game to keep the Mets in it, with no one else giving up a run.

Final score: Mets 4, Pirates 2—Better late than never

Final score: Mets 4, Pirates 2 Better late than never Share this story Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports The Mets entered the second game of the day needing to win to split the doubleheader and also to at least split the series. They had Tylor Megill on the mound, and while he only gave up one run and kept the Mets in the lead, he also only was able to go 3.2 innings with a high pitch count, and had several baserunners who could’ve tacked on more runs. Jeurys Familia, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Díaz kept the Mets in the game, with only Seth Lugo allowing a run on a Jacob Stallings solo home run.

Final Score: Pirates 6, Mets 2 Reynolds wraps it up Share this story Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images Marcus Stroman and the Mets kept pace with the Pirates on the first leg of Saturday’s doubleheader until a solo home run by opposing pitcher Tyler Anderson in the top of the fifth inning gave the Pirates the lead for good. Another two-run home run by All-Star Bryan Reynolds an inning later sealed the deal for Pittsburgh, as they beat the Mets 5-2 in seven innings Saturday afternoon in Queens. Brandon Nimmo showed out in the first inning, robbing a potential Reynolds home run to end the top of the inning before leading off the bottom inning with a single. He would eventually score on a Kevin Pillar RBI single, but that’s all the Mets were able to muster in the first.

Final Score: Mets 13, Pirates 4-Grandcisco Slamdor

Final Score: Mets 13, Pirates 4-Grandcisco Slamdor Share this story Photo by Adam Hunger/Getty Images After just sailing along for five innings, the Mets’ offense exploded for ten runs in the sixth inning en route to a 13-4 walloping of the Pirates at Citi Field. Francisco Lindor’s grand slam was the pièce de résistance of that inning, but almost the entire offense contributed to the victory. Pete Alonso crushed a three-run home run earlier in that same inning, and Jonathan Villar hit bombs from both sides of the plate throughout the course of the game. However, some of the damage was self-inflicted by Pittsburgh pitching when they both hit and walked a batter with the bases loaded.
