More powerful drugs and pandemic-related mental health issues contributed to a sharp rise in opioid-related deaths confirmed by provincial police in Southwestern Ontario last year.
Det. Const. Chris Auger, a drug enforcement expert with the OPP’s organized crime bureau, revealed data during an online panel discussion Wednesday that also featured Stratford-area public-health and mental-health officials.

There were 60 fatal overdoses in the OPP’s West Region last year, up from 38 in 2019. Provincial police in the region responded to 293 overdoses in total in 2020, 57 more than the year before.
