City to address brownfields

ONTARIO A post on the City of Ontario’s Facebook page on May 25 is asking the community about the existence of properties that may be considered “brownfields.” The program being advertised is called the Ontario-Malheur Brownfield Revitalization. To find out more about this terminology and what kind of assistance is available, the newspaper reached out to Ontario Community Development Director Dan Cummings, who responded in an email on May 27. “Brownfields are properties that are not living up to their potential because of known or suspected environmental issues. Common examples are old, vacant dry cleaners, gas stations/auto repair sites, or industrial/manufacturing sites. But vacant or underused lots or vacant/partially vacant buildings can also be considered brownfields because unknowns about past use may be limiting redevelopment,” wrote Cummings.

Ontario City Council puts temporary hold on ordinance fines and fees; considers negotiating with residents on 75 accounts

ONTARIO City of Ontario Finance Director Kari Ott took to the podium at the Ontario City Council’s work session on May 6 to make a presentation about an amnesty program for civil penalties that residents may have incurred. The idea was initially floated by City Manager Adam Brown, who was not at the meeting as he was out of town. After discussing the matter at length and hearing public comment from the lawyer representing Mayor Riley Hill in a lawsuit versus the city over civil penalties, the council took action to temporarily halt ordinance fines. The suggestion to put a temporary hold on the fines and fees related to ordinance violations until the program gets “figured out,” was brought forth by Councilor John Kirby.
