They have many reasons. In Vermont s best-known case, the chemicals known as PFAS contaminated hundreds of wells in Bennington after two former textile factories in the town baked them onto their products for years. Elsewhere in Vermont, evidence of contamination has turned up in the leachate of lined landfills because discarded rugs, furniture and clothes break down, and the PFAS-based waterproofing on fibers washes away.

For more than two years, Times reporters Paul Pringle and Alene Tchekmedyian have been uncovering a series of troubling scandals at the California National Guard that involve allegations of coverups, retaliation and the use of military planes during Black Lives Matter protests. The situation reached a head last week when they reported the firing of the general who commanded its air branch, the suspension of a second key general and new limits placed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on the organization’s use of fighter jets for civilian missions.
We asked Paul and Alene about what is going on.

While in Fargo he heard about opportunities to enhance the base and strengthen the educational benefits.
“The senator is right, we need smart people in the National Guard,” Lieutenant General Michael Loh said.
North Dakota Senator John Hoeven provided some insight into the new MQ-9 operations facility and more.
“We now secured $17.5 millon in the fiscal year 2021 budget which is funding to build a new operations center here on base,” Hoeven said.
The senator outlined opportunities to support and enhance the wing’s MQ-9 Reaper mission.

Turmoil has gripped the leadership ranks of the California National Guard, with the firing of the general who commanded its air branch, the suspension of a second key general and new limits placed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on the organization’s use of fighter jets for civilian missions.
Newsom’s office and the head of the Guard, Maj. Gen. David S. Baldwin, refused to provide details on the reasons behind the recent leadership changes other than a statement from the Guard saying that the organization “is committed to facilitating a positive working environment for all of its members, regardless of gender and ethnicity.”
