Failing Ozone Grade For Doña Ana Leaves Environmental Experts Concerned

4:45 A new report from the American Lung Association finds that over 40% of Americans live with unhealthy levels of air pollution. The American Lung Association’s 2021 State of the Air Report has compiled air quality data from 2017 through 2019 to identify the nation’s most polluted regions. Laura Kate Bender of the American Lung Association says that three out of every eight Americans are living in counties with a failing ozone grade. That includes residents of Doña Ana County, which recorded an average of over 22 high ozone level days annually. Despite the failing grade, Bender says the number of ozone days reported nationally has gone down since the last published report.

Air Quality: Report shows West Virginia starting to improve | News, Sports, Jobs

Apr 23, 2021 Though there are plenty who will argue the pace must be quickened, a recent report by the American Lung Association indicates we are slowly but surely making progress in improving air quality here in West Virginia. In its “State of the Air Report,” the ALA granted the Charleston-Huntington-Ashland Metro area its highest grade ever for ozone smog, with a B. Year-round particle pollution was also its best ever, according to Molly Pisciottano, advocacy director for Pennsylvania and West Virginia for the ALA. Air quality for the state as a whole was much improved, though Pisciottano told another media outlet “Spikes in particle pollution and ozone pollution can still be dangerous, especially for children or adults living with lung disease like asthma, COPD, and lung cancer.”

Earth Day: Where Utah Stands on Wildfires, Air Quality and Drought • Salt Lake Magazine

Our climate is changing. We can keep arguing about what’s causing it or whose fault it is (or isn’t) and what we should be doing about it, but the reality is our Earth is a different place than it was one million years ago, 100 years ago and even one year ago.  Since last Earth Day, the severity of wildfires has continued to escalate which, along with other factors, has contributed to our worsening air quality and current drought conditions have warranted a state of emergency in Utah, threatening not only our water but our precious snow and ski season.
