Planning inspector yet to be appointed to Sun Clock Tower appeal

Liberal Democrats have to take responsibility for Watford housing figures

As I write this I think of the 24-storey tower rising up in Ascot Road that I was pictured at the other week. I thought of this as I read last week’s letter from Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Watkin, who represents the leafy and very comfortable areas of Park and Nascot, as he bemoaned the Government’s housing figures for Watford and had the nerve to talk of having to “either cover the borough with multiple 6 or 7 storey apartment blocks in residential areas such as Nascot and Park, or concentrate the development in brownfield sites where they can be properly accommodated so protecting the wider residential areas, albeit having to go higher to do so…..”

Watford MP implored to help save the Sun Clock Tower

I have read a report in the Watford Observer of an appeal by an applicant that has been with the Government’s Planning Inspectorate, after Watford Borough Council turned down an application last month to demolish the Sun Clock Tower (Bid to demolish Clock Tower goes to appeal, April 9, 2021). As an old employee of Sun Printers, I do hope the applicant who submitted the application to Watford council to demolish the Sun Clock Tower and Extension in Ascot Road has second thoughts regarding his appeal. In the applicant’s representations to the inspectorate, the applicant is very selective and cherry picks regarding the clock tower’s present condition.

Sun Clock Tower refusal decision appealed by applicant

Sun Clock Tower in Ascot Road in Watford A historic monument is under threat once again after a decision to save it from demolition was challenged. An appeal has been lodged with the Government s planning inspectorate after Watford Borough Council turned down an application last month to knock down the Sun Clock Tower. A council officer refused the application due to the tower s historical significance to the local area adding the locally listed building is an important local landmark , which campaigners have said is a reminder of Watford s rich printing heritage . Campaigners had turned their focus to restoring the privately owned tower, but following an appeal, a government inspector will now scrutinise the plans and could potentially overrule the council s decision.
