Avon seeks $2M grant, local municipal support for Highway 6 pedestrian improvements

Special to the Daily Pedestrian safety along U.S. Highway 6 has been a major topic of discussion and contention for the town of Avon for many years. The lack of safe pedestrian crossings along the busy (and fast) corridor has resulted in a number of tragic accidents and presents a major safety concern for property owners. In the past 10 years, three major car-on-pedestrian crashes have been reported along the 3.5-mile stretch from Avon to EagleVail. This includes two incidents in 2014 and 2015, at Stonebridge Drive and Eagle Road respectively, where pedestrians were injured, and one fatal incident at Stone Creek Drive in 2019.

Avon to rendezvous with local businesses ahead of a busy summer of projects, events

Special to the Daily As part of its preparations for a busy summer season, the town of Avon is hosting an outlook meeting for local business owners. The meeting, which will take place at the Westin Riverfront Hotel on May 26, will give businesses the opportunity to learn about the town’s projects and projections for the summer as well as the opportunity to provide input and express concerns. Mayor Sarah Smith-Hymes, Town Manager Eric Heil and various town department directors will provide an overview of visitor projections and pending projects in Avon that impact local businesses. “We’re going to try and provide a really good overview of all the information the town has collected with our tax revenues as well as the projects that we’re working on so that everyone has a good idea on what we’re working on the town government side of things this summer,” Heil said.

Climate campaigners say time is running out to save the planet from carbon emissions

CLIMATE Friendly Bradford on Avon group have installed a countdown clock in the town s library car park to highlight that time is running out to save the planet from harmful carbon emissions. The clock made by one of the group s members, Chrissie Aslett, will count down the time to the start of the United Nation s COP26 Climate Conference in Glasgow from November 1-12. Mrs Aslett said: The Climate and Ecological Emergency is the greatest challenge facing our world. In November of this year the UN Climate Conference (COP 26) takes place in Glasgow, the core purpose of the conference is to review the Paris Agreement from 2015.
