After considering it for a couple of years, Haley McKinlay felt it was finally time to spearhead a cancer research fundraiser at her school.
But similar to most events during the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic torpedoed those plans.

Despite the pandemic spilling over into 2021, forcing the majority of students across Ontario to learn online from home, McKinlay decided to go ahead with a Relay for Life event at her Sarnia high school â just virtually. The Grade 10 studentâs efforts paid off as Great Lakes raised more than $30,000.
A hard hitting Knoxville offense gave the Washington softball team fits last night and the Demons dropped a pair of non-conference games.
On a perfect night for softball, the Panthers (4-2) utilized an early lead in game one and never wavered in a 4-1 victory. Washington had plenty of opportunities with runners in scoring position, but couldn’t get the timely hit. The Demons had five hits led by Kellie Dallmeyer with a pair of doubles and Ava Turner went 2-for-4 with the lone run scored. Cara Linnenkamp gave the team a chance in the circle tossing all seven innings giving up four runs on 10 hits and striking out five.
Hannibal Middle School students Riah Wigfall, Kennedi Gibbons and Konnor Asbury count money raised during the Furry Friends Fundraiser led by members of the Leaders of the Crew group. Students raised a total of $2,000 for the Northeast Humane Society.

The Southeast Conference recently released its girls basketball all conference teams and three Washington players were recognized.
Anna Nacos was the headliner being named to the second team. The senior guard led the Demons with 9.3 points, 2.2 steals, and 1.5 assists a game. Her best game was in Washington’s 38-37 playoff win over Oskaloosa where Nacos tallied 18 points. Alex Murphy and Josie Tanner were named honorable mention. Murphy really came along in the second half of her sophomore season to lead the team with six rebounds a night. She made 39% of her shots to average five points. Tanner led the team with 29 made three-point shots and chipped in with 4.6 points a contest. Four players were also named to the academic all conference list in Nacos, Tanner, Ava Turner, and Greta Rothe.
