Melbourne marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete

Earlier this month, Melbourne commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, with a number of events.
The Battle of Crete was one of the most dramatic battles of the Second World War. Over 12 days in May 194, a mixed force of New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops desperately tried to fight off a huge German airborne assault. Despite suffering appalling casualties, the parachutists and glider-borne troops who led the invasion managed to secure a foothold on the island and eventually gained the upper hand. The battle ended with the evacuation to Egypt of the bulk of the Allied force.

On Monday night, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios could not contain his emotions at events held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete at the Holy Monastery of Axion Esti, Northcote.
Speaking about the role of the church during the Battle of Crete, Archbishop Makarios told the tale of Erhardt Kestner, a German, who visited German cemetery of Crete in 1952 to pay his respects to his countrymen had lost their lives during the Nazi Occupation of Greece. There, he found a black-clad woman lighting candles at the graves of German soldiers.
“I approached her,” Kestner said. “And I asked her, ‘Are you from here?’.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia has responded to the scathing report published by the ABC making allegations against Archbishop Makarios and his lifestyle.
The report, which is founded on anonymous sources who spoke to Background Briefing accuses Makarios and the Archdiocese of funnelling money from aged care facilities.
In its response, the Archdiocese has expressed its grief and surprise that such a report was underway, using the dire predicament of many elderly homes during the pandemic.
According to the Archdiocese’s response the focus put on St Basil’s Aged Care and the negative spin against Archbishop Makarios feel like an intended attempt of defamation. The Archdiocese, explained the arrangements were in place prior to Makarios’ enthronement and denied having funnelled funds from aged care into the Archbishop’s lifestyle.
