How to reduce political polarization: Share your personal experiences

In his inauguration speech, President Joe Biden urged Americans to “listen to one another… show respect to one another.” Although not everyone embraces unity, a working democracy requires a basic level of respect among political opponents. Unfortunately, building respect is not easy, and my fellow researchers and I show in a new study one reason why: Americans believe incorrectly that political divides are best bridged by facts. The research also reveals how best to bridge political and social divides: Through stories of personal experience. Our society has long emphasized the importance of facts, and rightly so: Appreciating facts is essential for reliable science, effective medicine and good governance. Americans also assume that facts are essential for reducing political polarization. When people imagine conversations with political opponents, we find that both liberals and conservatives believe that deploying facts is the best route to fostering respect.
