International artist Annie
Gong – a one woman orchestra – is due to arrive in
Hastings tomorrow, to play at the Lighting of the Osmanthus
Gardens lantern festival on Friday and Saturday.
Based
in New Zealand but playing internationally until COVID-19
grounded her last year, China-born Gong has spent the last
12 months thrilling Kiwi audiences with her blend of Chinese
fusion, classical pieces, and rock music, on piano
accordion.
Festival organiser, Hastings District
councillor Kevin Watkins, said Gong, who started playing the
instrument at age five and trained at the Tianjin
Conservatory of Music, had performed with major symphony

A move to protect the future of the eastern face of Te Mata Peak is being considered by the Hastings District Council. The council s District Planning and Bylaws subcommittee on Tuesday received a report titled Proposed Plan Change 4 – Te Matā Eastern Face which proposes amendments to the district plan.

About 230 people attended the inaugural Focus on Business
held at Functions on Hastings at the end of last month, the
first of a quarterly series aimed at supporting local
businesses to network and succeed.
The guest speaker
was Kraft Heinz Company-Australia & NZ non-executive
chairman Mike Pretty, who spoke about innovation, rising to
challenges, and the future of food.
The event also
provided the opportunity to launch a new national marketing
campaign created by Hastings District Council’s economic
development team “Hastings. Like a Big City, But
Better”. The campaign is about attracting talent, business

Hastings District councillors have approved a $9.8 million budget increase for the council s high-profile water projects, noting the blow-out could have been worse if they hadn t started the upgrades sooner.
Large water tanks in Frimley Park and site near the council on Southampton St East are to be built as part of the water system upgrades set out in the 2018 Drinking Water Strategy.
