He said some homeowners’ associations in the area have expressed support for the project.
Opponents include District 1 Alderwoman Bernetta Lanier, who is concerned that a homeless shelter would be detrimental to an already lower income area of the city.
“It confounds me that they would not want the Salvation Army doing this good work in that area,” Egan said.
According to the minutes of the Dec. 10 city council meeting, discussion ensued between the council and two other properties owned by the Salvation Army – a thrift store at 3100 Montgomery St., and the church and community center at 3000 Bee Road.
Alderwoman Alicia Miller Blakely asked Egan whether there is consideration for expanding those properties instead of putting the facility in a low-wealth community. Egan answered that neither property would work for the proposed shelter facility.
