Lawan: Armed Forces Doing Good Job of Reversing Insecurity

By Deji Elumoye in Abuja and John Shiklam in Kaduna President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, yesterday gave the armed forces a pass mark in battling insecurity, notwithstanding the challenges facing them. He said their efforts are paying off as the security crisis confronting the country is gradually being reversed. He spoke on a day a northern group, under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to step up efforts to end the siege of Boko Haram, bandits and kidnappers in the region. Lawan, while hosting a delegation from Adamawa State that came to thank the National Assembly for converting the Modibbo Adama University, Yola, into a conventional university that can run medical programmes alongside social and management sciences said recent developments showed an improvement in efforts by the armed forces in combating insecurity.

The elders, operating under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development, spoke as bandits suspected to be kidnappers again killed four persons and abducted a professor, Aliyu Mohammed, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Monday night.

The Professor’s  son, Abdulaziz Aliyu, was killed by the bandits, while his nephew, one Abba Kabiru, was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital. Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Kaduna State.,said on Monday night that security agencies have reported to the Kaduna State Government that armed bandits on Sunday,also attacked commuters on the road from Anaba village to Birnin Yero town in Igabi local government area.

Gunmen abduct university professor, kill son in Zaria

Abdulaziz’s younger brother was also shot in the incident. Aliyu reported hearing gunshots when he returned to the family house at 10.30 p.m on Sunday and taking cover. According to him, when the gunshots stopped, he called out to one of his younger brothers who informed him that their brother had been killed and their father kidnapped. He said the deceased had already been buried according to Islamic rites while the one shot was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Ahmad Amfani, the ward head of Kuregu, Wusasa, said the community made effort to reach some security agencies, but their effort was not successful as none responded to the distress call.

DAILY POST learnt that the tanker driving towards GTB, Kuto, Abeokuta fell and went up in flames immediately. Several vehicles and motorcycles were trapped in the inferno. Many people struggled to escape being burnt. Owodunni Yekinni, a civil servant at the Ogun State Ministry of Works told our correspondent how he escaped death. According to Owodunni, the tanker had lost control and fell right beside his car, spilling its content. Our correspondent who visited the scene of the incident, confirmed that an okada rider was burnt beyond recognition.
