Diplomats in Nigeria are getting a dedicated NIN registration desk following a request by Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Under the plan, the National Identity Management Commission NIMC) will tomorrow set up a National Identity Number (NIN) enrolment centre at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ease enrolment for diplomats. The imminent NIN registration desk is expected to offer a reprieve for their enrollment for the ID scheme underway in the country.
Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, approved the enrolment desk for members of the Diplomatic Corps managed by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy through NIMC, according to a statement by the Ministry.
Even as Nigerians throng offices of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in their hundreds for the National Identification Number (NIN) registration and its linkage with their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM), the agency is taking steps to ensure that the over 203 licensed agents roll out services soon.
The Guardian can authoritatively report that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, was a guest of the Director-General of NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, yesterday, where they brainstormed on strategies to fast-track nationwide rollout by the leading mobile operator.
It was learnt that the guest told his host that MTN Nigeria planned to begin NIN enrolment with no fewer than 54,000 equipment nationwide shortly.

In one of his books with a catchy tittle as follows: “Civilian Dictators of Africa,” Shehu Sani noted in the preface thus:
• FG Intervenes As NIMC Workers Call Off Strike
• Enrollment Resumes Monday
• Afenifere Faults NIN Registration Amid COVID-19
Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Aliyu Aziz, has disclosed that 15 million people with Bank Verification Number (BVN) have been linked with the National Identity Number (NIN).
Besides, he said the ongoing enrollment into the National Identity System has nothing to do with the second wave of COVID-19, as the exercise had been on before the pandemic.
He told The Guardian in Abuja, yesterday, that NIMC has adequate equipment and up to this moment, the organisation has not utilised it to full capacity and the strategy now has changed completely.
