Mar 15, 2021 ∫ The Montmorency County Board of Commissioners paid tribute to past board members at its first meeting ain February. The commissioners honored long-time commissioner Bert LaFleche, Darryl Peterson, and Dave Wagner. Each of the men received a plaque saluting their service and accomplishments. The board also received an update from Sheriff Chad Brown who informed them a recent inspection was complete and the jail was in 100% compliance. The commissioners also voted to purchase a pair of patrol cars for $75,900. Julie Kendrick was appointed to the Montmorency County Council on Aging, as the Atlanta senior representative. ∫ The Alpena Municipal Council voted to approve a new social media policy that addresses types of social media platforms, social media administrators), administrative posts and activities, employee personal social media activity, and expectations for community interaction on City social media platforms.

Clerk/Treasurer Anna Soik said the deadline for people to file the appropriate paperwork to get their name on the ballot for the November election is July 20 at 4 p.m. Packets of information are available at the clerk’s office at City Hall. Two of the five council seats are up for grabs: those currently held by Mayor Pro Tempore Cindy Johnson and by Councilwoman Amber Hess. Johnson and Hess said they intend to seek another four-year term.

Township to gauge city s interest in possible fire contract | News, Sports, Jobs

sschulwitz@thealpenanews.com The Alpena Township Board of Trustees voted 4-3 on Wednesday to reach out to the City of Alpena to gauge interest in discussing a possible contract for fire services. Township Supervisor Nathan Skibbe said he will send the correspondence to Alpena Mayor Matt Waligora. The possibility of the township maintaining and restructuring the township fire department on its own is still on the table too. Trustees Cash Kroll and Steve Lappan, who are on the fire department ad hoc committee, voted against involving the city, as did Clerk Michele Palevich. The board also voted to allow Fire Chief Dave Robbins to continue the hiring process for a job candidate who is attending college in Saginaw and expected to graduate in May. The hiring is pending the candidate filing required paperwork and passing background checks. The hire is also contingent on the man having a valid work visa, as he is from Canada.

Council may amend ordinance, allow more medical marijuana shops | News, Sports, Jobs

sschulwitz@thealpenanews.com ALPENA The Alpena Municipal Council is working to remove a cap on how many medical marijuana provisioning centers can operate in the city. Council members voted 3-2 to direct city staff to draft an ordinance that would undo the limit, with Mike Nowak and Danny Mitchell voting against the motion to undo the cap, while Mayor Matt Waligora, Mayor Pro Tempore Cindy Johnson, and Councilwoman Amber Hess voted in favor of it. The ordinance currently in effect limits to two the number of provisioning centers allowed in the city, and provisioning centers are not allowed downtown. Two provisioning centers have been granted licenses but have not yet opened.
