(Courtesy Katherine Hughes-Fraitekh) Copyright © 2021 Albuquerque Journal Herb Hughes, a longtime state and local elected official, government administrator, university professor and coach – who had a hand in banning indoor smoking in Albuquerque and reworking the state funding formula for public schools – died earlier this month at his home in Albuquerque. He was 90 years old. Hughes, nicknamed “The Boy From Roy,” was born in Roy and raised in Albuquerque. He was tapped by two former governors for state jobs, served as a high-level administrator for Bernalillo County and was elected to two terms on both the Albuquerque City Council and the Public Regulation Commission.

Program offers second chance at earning high school diploma

Editor’s note: Today, the Journal continues “The Good News File,” a series of uplifting stories in partnership with KOAT-TV and KKOB Radio. The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Library system has teamed up with the New Mexico State Library to help high school dropouts earn a diploma. Career Online High School is available through public library systems across the country and launched in Albuquerque this January during the pandemic. Unlike some other paths to earning that missing piece of paper that says “I graduated,” this program allows participants to complete all their coursework online and costs are covered by a scholarship.
