COVINGTON, Ga. The first jury trials in more than a year in Newton County are set to begin next week.
Juries are set to be chosen under COVID-19 protocols for social distancing and mask-wearing beginning Monday, April 12, in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit.
District Attorney Randy McGinley said cases awaiting jury trials in Newton County courts will be allowed to proceed after being postponed since March 2020.
Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Melton issued an order March 9 allowing jury trials to resume in Georgia.

Gov. Brian Kemp appointed McGinley, the governor’s office said Monday.
McGinley is the district attorney of the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, which is comprised of Newton and Walton counties. He took over the position on an interim basis last year after Kemp appointed Layla Zon as a Superior Court judge. McGinley was elected to a full term in November.
Each county has its own child fatality review panel, to meet within 30 days of a child’s death and submit findings to the state.

Six projects selected for Georgia DNR Wildlife Viewing Grants promise new opportunities for Georgians to enjoy native animals and plants across the state.
Grant projects announced today by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will improve public opportunities to see and learn about native animals and plants statewide. The six proposals selected by the DNR Wildlife Resources Division as 2021 recipients in the Wildlife Viewing Grants Program range from Cairo to Covington and from Varnell to Tybee Island.

COVINGTON, Ga. Former district attorney candidate and assistant DA Destiny Bryant was sworn in as Newton County Associate Probate and Magistrate judge Friday.
Probate Judge Melanie Bell appointed Bryant and swore her in during a ceremony at the Judge Horace Johnson Jr. Judicial Center in Covington.
“Through her time in DeKalb County, her return here, and even into Henry County, I know she, as a professional and as a person, will embody all of those characteristics that a judge should embody,” Bell said in a video posted on the county government’s website.

ATHENS, Ga. The late Judge Horace J. Johnson Jr. was named this year’s Innovations in Community Leadership Award recipient by the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development at the University of Georgia (UGA).
Johnson was chosen for the award for his “commitment to developing leaders and strengthening his hometown of Newton County and communities across Georgia,” according to the publication UGA Today.
