Haliburton County to post shoreline FAQs for public

Waves on Rainy Lake – Jenn Watt Staff Environment16 February 2021 By Chad Ingram The County of Haliburton will create and post answers to frequently asked questions regarding a shoreline preservation bylaw, to be housed on the county’s website. As previously reported, during a Jan. 27 meeting, county council voted to discontinue the in-house process that had been in place surrounding the creation of a shoreline preservation bylaw, and issue a request for proposals for a consulting firm to conduct scientific reviews, public consultation, and then produce a draft bylaw. That decision came after widespread public criticism that the draft bylaw that been up for public review was too restrictive and difficult to understand.

County donates $25K to assist students with internet costs

Haliburton County council passed its 2021 budget last week. News3 February 2021 By Chad Ingram The County of Haliburton will contribute $25,000 to Point in Time’s campaign to assist students in the county with internet costs in the online learning environment created by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. During a Jan. 13 online meeting, county councillors received a presentation from the social services agency, explaining that some 150 students in the county were unable to attend school virtually. They heard how the data requirements of Google Meet,the platform by which online takes place, can quickly consume a family’s data package for the month.

Shortly before 2 p.m. dozens of people, some as far away as Minden and Haliburton Village, reported experiencing a loud blast and subsequent rumbling. While there was much immediate speculation online about what could have caused the issue, Algonquin Highlands Mayor Carol Moffatt moved quickly to allay the public’s fears.
