The leaked audiotape of Islamic Republic Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has elicited much fanfare in recent weeks. Among the less scrutinized aspects of the tape has been Zarif’s reference to the Islamic Republic’s ongoing support of the Bashar al-Assad regime, including the fact that Iran Air the flag carrier of the country continues to transport arms and fighters into the Syrian conflict. Press freedom advocates have sharply condemned Israel’s bombing of a Gaza building that housed the offices of Al Jazeera and the Associated Press news agency, calling it a brazen attempt to “silence” journalists covering the Israeli military’s ongoing offensive that has killed scores of people.
The 11-storey al-Jalaa building, which also houses a number of residences and other offices, was destroyed in an Israeli strike on Saturday afternoon. Dust and debris kicked up into the air as the building tipped and came crashing to the ground.
“The attack on the building that we have seen is a shocking and, it seems to me, catastrophic attempt to shut down media, to silence criticism, and worst of all, to create a cloak of secrecy around this conflict,” said Aidan White, founder of the Ethical Journalism Network, a network of global journalists and press rights groups.
Palestinian protests mobilized in response to planned evictions in East Jerusalem, and police have cracked down on protesters as clashes have continued to escalate during the holy month of Ramadan. Police forces attacked worshippers at East Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque on May 8, the last Friday of the holiday, and raided the mosque again on Monday. Hamas has responded with rocket fire, provoking Israeli airstrikes. The death toll so far includes 65 people in Gaza, including 16 children, and seven Israelis, including two children. The clashes represent the worst fighting in the region in seven years.

The two-tiered treatment between Israelis and Palestinians was always there, writes
Eric Goldstein. He argues that Israeli authorities clearly intend to maintain the system of severe discrimination into the future – an intent that constitutes the third prong of the crime of apartheid.
The equal treatment of people is fundamental to universal rights and our shared human values. Yet, millions of Palestinians face systematic discrimination. After more than two years of systematic legal analysis, Human Rights Watch, the organisation where I have spent most of my career, in a recently published report, has come to the conclusion that Israeli officials are committing the crimes of apartheid and persecution.
