Renewables to attract $11 trillion spend by 2050, says report

BEIRUT: Renewable energy will attract $11 trillion in investment in coming decades as production costs fall, according to a report by Al Sharq, citing an analysis by Bloomberg NEF, the newswire’s research arm. The Bloomberg NEF report said there was a need for a significant increase in the number of renewable energy projects, adding that wind and solar energy projects will account for 56 percent of all global electricity sources by 2050. Gas will be the only fossil fuel that will increase its share of demand in coming years, according to the report. The spread of electric vehicles will affect future of oil demands, with the report saying that about 65 percent of road trips will be done using electric cars by 2050.

Domestic helpers high fees irk Qataris | Qatar – Gulf News

Cairo: Qataris have complained about hikes in fees for employing foreign domestic helpers, blaming disruptions resulting from coronavirus-related restrictions for the problem. They said that fees for hiring domestic helpers have soared to 4,500 Qatari riyals per month. In addition to the hiring fees, sponsors now have to bear all other expenses such as those of quarantine on arrival costing 2,400 to 4,000 riyals depending on the isolation place as well as travel tickets. Amir Al Bakir, a sponsor, told the Qatari newspaper Al Sharq that he had contracted the recruitment of two domestic helpers earlier last year, but their arrival has been hampered by shutdowns of airports due to the pandemic. “The fees were lower before the corona as I paid 11,000 riyals each for employing two Filipinas. Now I’m required by the owner of the recruitment office to pay costs of their quarantine although the contracts for hiring them were signed before the pandemic,” he said.

Qatar Museums, the government authority responsible for most state museums and public works in the country, announced on social media that “a new incident of vandalism” to the East West/West East (2014) sculpture on 28 December. The work, which was commissioned by the Qatari royal family, is made up of four 14m-high steel plates spread over 1km in the remote location of the Brouq nature reserve. “The vandals were apprehended by authorities and were referred to public prosecution for the necessary legal action to be taken against them,” the announcement states.
