We shouldn t lose sight of uniquely Emirati heritage

In the UAE, we are fairly good at preserving cultural heritage, at least our buildings. There is room for improvement, but the concept of protecting it is well-established. There is, however, more to cultural heritage than buildings. Unesco has a category for Intangible Cultural Heritage , which it defines as the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognise as part of their cultural heritage . Several elements of the country’s culture have been formally inscribed on Unesco’s World Heritage List for Intangible Heritage, or have been nominated. These include the ancient aflaj water irrigation system, along with the oral traditions and skills related to it, Al Sadu (traditional weaving), the Ayyala dance and falconry. There is, however, more that is worthy of attention.

Expo 2020 Dubai s wayfinding weaves Middle East tradition with Western design

February 16, 2021 11:45 am Spaceagency has designed the wayfinding and signage system for Expo 2020 Dubai, incorporating a local UNESCO-protected weaving technique. Expo 2020 was due to open at Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October last year but has been postponed until October 2021 and is set to run until March 2022. It’s the first time that the world exposition has been postponed. It will showcase pavilions from over 190 countries including the UK entry, a “choral landscape”, by Es Devlin. The original name has been retained for branding. Spaceagency started work on the project in 2014, according to studio director Sarah Manning, and the design has evolved several times over this period.
