WASHINGTON – Today the Drug Enforcement Administration announced a new initiative, Project Wave Breaker, to disrupt the flow of deadly fentanyl into the United States.
Project Wave Breaker will direct interdiction, enforcement, and outreach efforts to high-impact areas to disrupt the flow of fentanyl in and around the United States. The initiative will also employ analytical intelligence assets to target the activities of Mexican transnational criminal organizations, which are the primary suppliers and distributors of illicit fentanyl and fentanyl substances throughout the United States.

Dubbed “Project Wave Breaker,” the initiative will build on strategies that have long been in play in San Diego, where border authorities got some of the earliest glimpses of the fentanyl trafficking trend that has since reshaped the illicit drug market.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin just a little packs the same punch. It is also cheaper and easier to manufacture than heroin. The profit margin is a huge reason why major drug cartels and street-level dealers both have become overwhelmingly reliant on using fentanyl as the active ingredient in the drug supply either with or without the customer’s knowledge.
