“[Spencer Lee] is a mean little bastard on the mat. He’s a nice kid, but he’s a mean little bastard on the mat and I love it.”
-Tom Brands
Our Hawkeyes accepted a late night challenge from our northern rivals and ventured beyond the border to face off against the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The once proud rodent-people knew they faced an uphill battle, but they still dreamed of stealing a few wins. Perhaps the only victories they found, however, were of the moral variety. Alas, the bitter taste of an ass-whoppin will resonate for at least one more year as our Hawkeyes spit roasted them to the score of 35-4.
University of Iowa Sports Information 1/23/2021 MINNEAPOLIS The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team extended its winning streak to 15 duals with a 35-6 win at No. 15 Minnesota on Friday night at the Maturi Sports Pavilion. The margin of victory was the largest in the series since a 44-2 Hawkeye win in 1992.
Wrestling insertIowa piled up 34 takedowns and won the first nine bouts, scoring bonus points in five of them, and finished the dual with a 115-45 edge in match points and a 34-7 advantage in takedowns.
The Hawkeyes scored bonus points in the first three matches and added two more major decisions after the break. Minnesota didn t record a takedown until the eighth match of the night, and didn t get on the board until the final match of the dual.
New week, new venue, new opponent same result. Iowa s top-ranked wrestling team took their dominant lineup on the road for the first time this season, visiting #11 Minnesota in Minneapolis, and came away with another thoroughly lopsided victory, 35-4. Iowa won the first nine bouts of the match and was so dominant that Minnesota didn t even record their first takedown of the meet until the eighth match of the night (184 lbs). Unbelievable. I have ran out of adjectives. This dual meet looked like a mismatch on paper and it proved to be every bit a mismatch in reality. Iowa s lineup is stocked with upperclassmen, many of whom are at or near the top of their respective weights; six of Iowa s ten starters are ranked third or better. Minnesota s lineup is full of young wrestlers, most of whom are in the fringes of the Top 20, or outside it altogether. Iowa has three wrestlers ranked #1; Minnesota has three wrestlers ranked in the Top 10, period. That s a recipe for a bludgeoni

“Yeah, I’m enjoying wrestling and I’m looking forward to keep on enjoying wrestling this year.”
-Nelson “The Hulk” Brands
I think he enjoys wrestling. I think we all enjoy wrestling.
Our Iowa Hawkeyes ripped through Nebraska Friday night, 31-6, leaving behind a mangled mess of bloody limbs and broken dreams. The Cornhuskers braved the winter storm, ice covered roads, and near white-out conditions to test their mettle against the #1 team in the country. Unfortunately for them, they were sent back across the border in body bags.
The Huskers are always down for a chippy dual, especially against us. Last year they put up a spirited fight, keeping all matches close, as they only gave up one bonus point loss. This year, they looked to improve on their competitive drive by winning a couple toss up matches to try and steal the dual in Carver-Hawkeye… but their luck ran out, early.
