Alex Faedo will undergo Tommy John surgery later this month to repair a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, the team announced Saturday. Selected 18th overall in the 2017 Draft, Faedo is one of five pitchers ranked within the franchise s Top 30 prospects.

Well, this isn’t great. Detroit Tigers prospect Alex Faedo will undergo Tommy John surgery later this month, according to the team.
Faedo, along with fellow right-handed pitcher Matt Manning, was shut down for the season in August due to forearm tightness. While no formal minor league season was played due to coronavirus, Faedo was pitching regularly with the rest of the Tigers’ “taxi squad” in Toledo. The shutdown ended any shot Faedo had at a major league debut in 2020.
Now, Faedo is facing two lost seasons in a row. The 6’5 righthander enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2019 after a lackluster debut the year prior, striking out 134 hitters in 115

The team announced Saturday that Faedo needs to have his ulnar collateral ligament reconstructed. The typical timetable for recovery is 14 to 16 months. The right-hander is the Tigers No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
“After consultation between our club medical experts and outside specialists, the recommendation was made for Alex Faedo to undergo reconstructive surgery of his UCL on his right arm, Tigers general manager Al Avila said in a released statement on Saturday. Alex is in agreement with this course of action, and is scheduled to have the procedure later this month. We know he will approach the process with the necessary dedication that gets him back on the mound.”

Alex Faedo will undergo UCL surgery later this month, as per a statement released by the team. As per the usual timeline for Tommy John procedures, Faedo will miss the entire 2021 season but should be ready by Opening Day 2022.
Faedo has a 3.96 ERA, 4.07 K/BB rate, and 9.3 K/9 over 236 1/3 innings in Detroit’s farm system, moving from high-A ball to Double-A in 2018 and then spending all of 2019 with Double-A Erie. Any thought that Faedo could skip Triple-A and make his Major League debut in 2020 was first hampered when a positive COVID-19 diagnosis kept him out of Summer Camp, and then Faedo was shut down due to a forearm strain in August.
