The politics of denial
Class and the politics of narrow nationalism are now entwined, writes Eddie Ford. Instead of denying its own role in helping to bring about this sorry situation, the left needs to do some serious thinking
Everyone is now trying to come to terms with the fallout from last week’s elections on ‘super Thursday’, especially the Hartlepool disaster-cum-debacle. Firstly, insofar as it is a valid exercise at all, how would the results have panned out in a general election? The polls tell us 36% for the Tories, Labour on 29%, the Liberal Democrats with 17% and others on 18% (Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru, Greens, etc).

Labour’s West Lothian Council depute leader Kirsteen Sullivan took second place on 12,588, with Bathgate’s Conservative councillor Charles Kennedy adding almost 2,000 votes to his 2016 showing in the constituency, polling 9,472 votes.
The turnout was 62.2 per cent of the electorate, up almost 10 per cent on 2016. The SNP’s majority was down in terms of percentage, but up in terms of votes to 10,105 – an extra 4,219 on the 2016 figure.
Fiona Hyslop said: “I want to thank all the 22,693 voters across the towns and villages of West Lothian in the Linlithgow Constituency for voting for me and I pledge to serve all my constituents, whether or not they voted for me, to the best of my ability and make sure their issues and concerns are heard at the heart of Government.
