This weekend: New restaurants, a birthday dinner, and other food events

It’s been a banner week for new coffee shops, first with the debut of Glasser Coffee Co. in Brighton, and now with the opening of Cicada Coffee Bar in Cambridge’s Central Square. The Vietnamese coffee shop, which launched Friday morning, is fueled by Vietnamese women-owned roasters: Nguyen Coffee Supply in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Càphê Roasters in Philadelphia, Penn. The menu includes cappuccinos, coconut affogatos, and the Cicada Latte, but the honey mousse espresso, or cà phê trứng, looks particularly delightful. It’s traditionally prepared with egg yolks, condensed milk, coffee, and, in Cicada’s case, local knotweed honey instead of sugar. To eat, the cafe also has a variety of bánh mì sandwiches and pho salads, plus pastries from Butternut Bakery in Arlington. Orders can be placed for pickup here.

At long last, first-years arrive on campus

In Grinnell, the cold has settled in. A soft blanket of snow coats the whole campus, muting the sound of footsteps, so silent that it is a constant reminder of what could have been. While it is a far cry from the boisterous nature of Grinnell in the past, the chill has not dampened the spirits of new Grinnellians huddled together in the dorms. With the beginning of Spring 1, Grinnell College invited all first-years and select upperclassmen to live on campus, in addition to students who received permission to live on campus in Fall 1 and 2. Students began moving in the last week of January at staggered times, based on their dorm assignments.

The Lynn W. Ross Juvenile Detention Center in Fort Worth is just one of many correctional facilities across the state that struggled with harsh conditions when a winter storm devastated the Lone Star State s power grid. The juvenile center lost power Sunday and fully regained heat and power by Thursday, a correctional officer said. At the height of the storm, the coldest room at the juvenile center had a temperature of 27 degrees Fahrenheit, the officer said. The children were unable to contact their families until Wednesday.
