One in three women and one in five men globally have been the victim of âstealthingâ, the non-consensual act of removing a condom during sex, yet the term has only recently entered public awareness â and courtrooms.
âAnecdotally, stealthing was something that felt yuck, confusing, violating and wrong,â the Australian Capital Territoryâs Liberal opposition leader, Elizabeth Lee, says. âBut victims of it didnât even know it had a name, let alone that it negated their consent.â
In 2015, Monica Tan described stealthing in Guardian Australia as âsort-ofâ rape. Two years later, American civil rights attorney Alexandra Brodsky wrote of ârape-adjacentâ condom removal for Columbiaâs Journal of Gender and Law, enshrining its colloquial name in academia. In the same year, both victims and perpetrators shared their âstealthing storiesâ to Triple Jâs Hack.
