Burns Night: How the Bard and Scotland are tied to the Durham miners

THIS magnificent miners banner dating from the 1890 s and still regularly on display at Beamish Museum, County Durham, is living proof that Robert Burns values of egalitarianism and radicalism were appreciated outside his native Scotland - even in the days before the internet turned the Bard into a worldwide icon. The Lambton lodge banner - made in the North East of England by SM Peacock of South Shields and featuring the 1787 Alexander Nasmyth portrait of Burns and an image of his Alloway birthplace - is one of three Durham miners banners of the time to honour the ploughman poet . However only the giant 10ft x 9ft one (above) is still in existence.

Slave trade links of Scotland s Glenfinnan memorial revealed

The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), the charity that owns Glenfinnan and many of Scotland’s best-known historic sites, is now rewriting its literature and displays at the memorial, including relabelling a scale model of the Du Teillay to give prominence to those slavery links. A large portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie at Glenfinnan visitor centre is being replaced in early 2021 by a new display detailing those links and new research that has uncovered significant ties between many Highland estate owners and slave plantations across the Americas. In a strange collision of historic and contemporary cultures, Glenfinnan is also one of Scotland’s most popular tourist destinations because its nearby railway viaduct features heavily in Harry Potter films: it was the backdrop to Harry’s flying car and used by the Hogwarts school train.

Letters: I m looking forward to Donald Trump being confirmed as a two-time loser

DONALD Trump’s attempt to pressure officials in the US State of Georgia to overturn the result in the election he lost ( Trump put pressure on Georgia election official to ‘find’ him votes , The Herald, January 5) is disgraceful, but reveals what a shockingly bad President he’s been. As though we needed any more evidence. It would be poetic justice if disgruntled Republicans boycotted today’s Senate election in Georgia and the two Democrat candidates sneaked home, ideally by 11,779 votes. That would give a 50:50 split in the Senate, the upper house in US Congress, with the casting vote in the hands of Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris.
