The Red Cross has an emergency need for blood donors. While there are blood shortages every summer, this summer s shortage is worse than most because of effects of the pandemic, according to Dr. Tom Raife, director of transfusion services at UW Health. In a news release, the Red Cross said it needs to collect more than 1,000 additional blood donations each day to meet the current hospital demand and end the severe blood shortage. For the first 14 or so months of the pandemic up to this June, the Red Cross actually saw really great  donor turnout, said Justin Kern, communications director for the Red Cross in Wisconsin.
