New Jersey s chief law enforcement official on Thursday released police bodycam footage of the arrest of a 64-year-old Trenton man who died 18 days later in the hospital.
Joseph Ahr Sr., 64, was already being restrained by three police officers when a fourth pepper-sprayed him in the face last July 6, video released by state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal shows.
“I can’t breathe,” Ahr says over and again, both before and after the officers got him up and sat him handcuffed on the front steps of his Monmouth Street house following a seconds-long struggle.
They had responded there following a call from Ahr’s son and were speaking with the son when the elder Ahr came to the door, Grewal said.

THE State Ombudsman has ruled Grant District mayor Richard Sage committed misconduct in public administration by failing to declare with a conflict of interest and refusing to follow council’s Charter of Agreed Behaviours.
At tonight’s council meeting, Grant elected members will consider three recommendations made by South Australian Ombudsman Wayne Lines, including a requirement Mr Sage undertake conflict of interest training and reprimand Mr Sage should he fail to commit to the charter.

The Bergen County woman said she thought her troubles had ended last May when she took refuge in her car after an altercation at her then-boyfriend s home in Vernon.
But as she settled into her vehicle for the night, she heard a knock on the window, she said in a lawsuit filed last week in Sussex County.
The knock was allegedly a prelude to a sexual assault by a Vernon Township police officer, Emanuel Rivera, who now faces criminal charges over the May 2020 incident. In the suit filed in state Superior Court, his alleged victim says the encounter has left her with lasting emotional trauma.
Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced on April 29 that an alleged local leader of the Latin Kings street gang and eight inmates allegedly under his command in various correctional facilities – including Northern State Prison in Newark and New Jersey State Prison in Trenton – have been charged with forming a “hit squad” within the prison system to commit assaults on behalf of the gang.
They are specifically charged with engaging in conduct including a brutal attack on one inmate in New Jersey State Prison, a planned assault on another inmate in Northern State Prison that was prevented by the New Jersey Department of Corrections (DOC), and possession of makeshift blades called “shanks,” according to the statement.
