LAS CRUCES – Courts and juries are starting to understand that it s very, very important to hold police officers that commit crimes responsible.
Albuquerque-based attorney Sam Bregman, who has been on both sides of cases involving police officers, reflected on the conviction Tuesday of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd last May.
Bregman noted that a major force behind that shift is the prevalence of video, including bystanders mobile phone footage of Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd s neck for over nine minutes.
The ability to film those incidents and distribute the footage rapidly via social media has initiated a new age when it comes to holding law enforcement officers accountable, Bregman said.
