© Qingyan Zhu Text description provided by the architects. A series of interventions breathes new life into the 3-story brick-concrete pseudo garden villa built in 1990s in Shanghai French Concession. The building experienced several times of refurbishment, lacking legible structure system and stylistic characteristic. It is a mundane patch among the neighborhood, juxtaposed with garden villas, 6-story public ho using and office towers to the further north. The building can be neither a nostalgia of concession, nor a mimic of modernism. It can only be itself under specific condition, trying to fit in while confronting its surroundings. © Fangfang Tian The building has only one exposed facade while the volume was missing on the southwest corner. Hongkong Art Storage / penda

Courtesy of penda Text description provided by the architects. The project describes a space for storing and selling paintings in a tower located in the centre of Hong Kong. Model 1 Given the program of an infrequently used space, we are introducing a suitcase-like box made out of matte-reflecting copper panels. Courtesy of penda The box can be fully opened and integrated into the space; thus, after the paintings are shown, the box can be fully folded up to secure the artwork when the space is unoccupied. Courtesy of penda The box is made out of copper and inhabits a sliding drawer for artwork, a cozy couch, a bar, a beamer, and a working desk.

© Yuchen Chao Our visit to the newspaper factory inspired us to look at the possibility of integrating two newspaper medium at the new office: newspapers and aluminum print plates. In piles of newspaper archive, obsolete ink texts and pictures became patterns. The stacks also create another sectional pattern defined by coloring and width of the newspaper sheets. © Yuchen Chao We perceive this to be an opportunity to embed memories of the past urban events in the space, for its quality of being as light and vulnerable as the paper, and as heavy and substantial as the history it carries. To invest time to turn a non-conventional building material into an architectural element was quite a challenge for us. Over two years of planning, various ways of assemblage were sampled and tested. At the end L-shaped aluminum stripes were used for fixing the newspaper bundles.
