Prime Ministers move in mysterious ways – not least when appointing their Cabinets. It isn’t just jealous backbenchers who wonder why on earth so-and-so was made Secretary of State, when someone patently better suited was available.
Take the premiership of Theresa May. To those of us watching from the gallery, some of her appointments were difficult to fathom. What had made her decide that the Culture Secretary should be Karen Bradley, rather than, say, Tracey Crouch? What had made her decide that the International Development Secretary should be Priti Patel, rather than, say, Alistair Burt? What had made her decide that the Transport Secretary should be Chris Grayling, rather than, say, a random tourist from the parliamentary gift shop, or a passing pigeon?
THE DUNBLANE massacre in Scotland 25 years ago was one of the UK’s most shocking gun crimes and was a horrific event that shook the entire structure of the country. Thomas Hamilton shot and killed 16 pupils and their teacher in the gym hall of Dunblane Primary School on March 13 1996 before shooting himself. Such was the nature of the shooting, fear gripped much of the country as parents asked themselves if they thought their child was safe in their place of education. Schools reevaluated their safety procedures, bolstering security and improving the systems they already had in place. One school in Bury thought they would be the next target of a madman when a man with a bogus shotgun terrified schoolchildren just weeks after the massacre.

The Conservatives are investigating comments by one of their senior Welsh politicians who compared rioting in the US Congress to people who backed a second referendum on Brexit.
Andrew RT Davies faced calls to retract tweets aimed at Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and Senedd member Alun Davies.
The Tory politician later tweeted that violence must never be tolerated .
Labour is demanding that Mr Davies be suspended and barred from standing as a Conservative in this year s Welsh Parliament election.
The Capitol was breached by the rioters as federal lawmakers met to confirm President-elect Joe Biden s win in the 2020 US election.
