1/1 A DETECTIVE in the Babes in the Wood investigation has been accused of “gaslighting” the girlfriend of the killer, a court heard. Jennifer Johnson is accused of perverting the course of justice to allow killer Russell Bishop to evade justice over the murder of two nine-year-old girls in Wild Park, Brighton. Bishop was acquitted of the 1986 murders of Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway at a trial at Lewes Crown Court in 1987, but was convicted in 2018 and jailed for life. Johnson, 55, is on trial in connection with evidence given about a blue Pinto sweatshirt, which linked Bishop to the crime scene.

20:20 EDT, 15 April 2021 The ex-girlfriend of Babes in the Wood murderer Russell Bishop lied on oath at his criminal trial, prosecutors say. Jennifer Johnson, who had children with Bishop and lived with him in Hollingdean, Brighton at the time of the murders, is charged with perjury and perverting the course of justice in the 1987 trial. The 55-year-old is alleged to have denied that a blue sweatshirt that finally ended up convicting Bishop thirty years later belonged to him. Nine-year-olds Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway were found dead after they went missing while out playing in Wild Park, Brighton on October 9, 1986. Bishop walked free after his trial the following year but was re-arrested more than three decades later following advances in DNA technology and analysis of the blue jumper which prosecutors said gave up its secrets.

Jennifer Johnson is accused of telling “lies that were important” in the tragic case in Brighton. It includes an account about a crucial piece of evidence – a blue Pinto sweatshirt found near the scene. Bishop was first tried for the brutal murders of nine-year-olds Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows, from Moulsecoomb, in 1987 but was acquitted. The schoolgirls were found sexually assaulted and strangled in a woodland den in Wild Park, Brighton in October 1986. The horrific crime shocked the community, and their families spent years fighting for justice.
