Trefon Angasan, who died of COVID-19, remembered as irreplaceable Alaska Native leader

Brad worked with him for the past 15 years at the Alaska Peninsula Corporation, of which Angasan was chairman.  “Really, probably, the smartest man I’ve ever met in my life,” Brad said. “Just an incredible resource with regards to Alaska Native policy history, the history of our region, and was also an incredible businessman. He had amazing business intuition and business sense. That’s going to be a pretty big void to fill.”

Van Daele appointed chair of Alaska Board of Game

Former Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist Larry Van Daele has been named chair of the Alaska Board of Game, becoming the first Kodiak resident to hold the position.  Van Daele said that it was “humbling” to be voted into the position. The appointment occurred on Jan. 21. He said that after 40 years in the field, he has come full circle in his career.  “Forty years ago this week, I first started as a volunteer for Fish and Game,” Van Daele said.  “Then I became  a technician, then a biologist, then a supervisor. Then I retired and I got on the Board of Game and now I’m chairman.”

Alaska regents extend contract for interim president Follow Us Question of the Day     By - Associated Press - Friday, January 15, 2021 JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The University of Alaska Board of Regents has extended the contract for its interim president. The board last summer announced Pat Pitney would take over as interim president Aug. 1, and stay at least a year in the position and up to 18 months. On Friday, the board announced a search for a permanent president would not begin until spring 2022 and that Pitney would remain as interim president until the permanent position is filled. The board, in making the announcement, cited in part funding uncertainties for the university system and a desire for stability.
