Facing huge problems, the Alaska Legislature still hasn’t decided who’s in charge Published January 17 Share on Facebook Print article JUNEAU Days before the start of the 32nd Alaska State Legislature, the Alaska House and the Alaska Senate are leaderless, leaving the Legislature unable to address pressing state issues. “There’s nothing new to report,” said Rep. Bryce Edgmon, I-Dillingham, the House speaker for the past four years. “We’re working away at it here,” said Rep. Steve Thompson, R-Fairbanks, “but right now, mum’s the word.” With neither half of the Legislature organized, lawmakers will be unable to consider Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s proposal to pay nearly $5,000 to each Alaska resident this year. Election-reform measures proposed by Republicans cannot be advanced. Police-reform measures supported by Democrats will also languish.

House Bill 4 would exempt businesses and employees from liability for “sickness, death, economic loss, and other damages suffered by a customer” who is exposed to COVID-19 while patronizing the business, unless there is intentional misconduct or gross negligence. House Bill 1 would require an audit of CARES Act expenditures for the community assistance program and direct grants to communities and municipalities. Lisa Murkowski, should be proud of the hard work it took to include an array of clean energy provisions in the recent bipartisan COVID-19 relief and omnibus spending bill. These provisions include the Energy Act of 2020 the first clean energy innovation package passed by Congress in more than a decade and will help advance clean energy here in Alaska and across the country. In addition to sponsoring many of the provisions in the Energy Act of 2020, Sen. Murkowski also led the effort to include the legislative package in the omnibus bill. She worked across party lines and chambers to advance a spate of energy initiatives that will help us reduce emissions, create jobs and power a stronger, more resilient American economy.

Growing up in this small town with her adoptive parents, she faced extreme segregation and discrimination. Instead of being welcomed by the community, she encountered signs that read: “No Natives Allowed,” “No Dogs, No Natives,” and “We Cater to White Trade Only.”
