SitNews - Stories In The News - Ketchikan, Alaska

Drency and Lillian Dudley, December 04, 1953 Photo courtesy JUDY ZENGE If you ask most people why the field is named after Drency Dudley, they will say it is because Dudley, a local civic leader from the 1940s to the 1960s, owned the land that became Dudley Field, which is the sports area adjacent to Ketchikan High School. Not surprisingly, that common belief is not true. While Dudley was a leader in promoting local youth sports and led the Lions Club to build the field on Jackson Street between Fifth and Seventh avenues in the mid-1950s, the land actually belonged to several private property owners, local government and the Ketchikan Pulp Company.

Royal Caribbean Not to Cancel Any Canada and Alaska Cruises Although the Canadian Government has been firm in its decision to ban all cruise ship travel from their shores, Royal Caribbean has now announced it will not be canceling any voyages. This includes cruises embarking/debarking from Canadian ports and those itineraries touching on Canadian ports of call. The cruise line says it is working through potential options with the Government of Canada and the USA and the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA). The announcement comes as Alaskan government officials called the travel ban ‘unacceptable’. Call For Guests To Keep Their Reservations

Congress members call Canada s ban of cruise ships unacceptable

Matt Hochberg Canada s decision to ban all cruise ships for a year is not sitting well with the state of Alaska. Following Canada s Ministry of Transport decision to ban cruise ships from its waters until February 2022, lawmakers are looking for ways to salvage a critical piece of Alaska tourism industry. Without access to Canadian ports, cruise ships cannot legally sail to Alaska due to U.S. maritime law.  In a joint statement, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Sen. Dan Sullivan, and Congressman Don Young, called the Canadian cruise ship ban, unacceptable and said they are looking for answers as to why the ban had to be so long.
