An $83.4 million project featuring an iconic cable-stay arch bridge is nearing completion in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The
Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is overseeing the construction, which calls for additional lanes on Interstate 20/59, along with a single point urban interchange (SPUI) on McFarland Boulevard (U.S.-82) directly below the interstate. This work is part of the add lanes and bridge replacement project from near Exit 73 to near Exit 77 that‘s intended to improve safety, mobility and commerce, said ALDOT west central region spokesman John McWilliams.

FAIRHOPE – Baldwin and Mobile officials plan to ask Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Transportation to look at options to get the Interstate 10 Mobile River bridge project back on track.
Fairhope City Council President Jack Burrell told Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization members Wednesday, Jan. 27, that he had asked Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson to send a joint letter from the two MPOs asking state officials to resume plans for the project.
Burrell is chairman of the Eastern Shore MPO. Stimpson is chairman of the Mobile MPO. The MPOs oversee funding for regional road projects.
Plans to build the new bridge and expand the Bayway was called off in 2019 when the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization removed the project from its Transportation Improvement Plan. The removal made the $2.1-billion project ineligible for federal funding. After the vote, Ivey said the move by the MPO killed the bridge project.

Getting it open, however, is the problem and it basically comes down to money.
Money is being lost at Town Madison and, in turn, the city of Madison without the ramp and there is the lack of money to begin work on the westbound interchange that the Alabama Department of Transportation said is required to open the eastbound interchange.

The one caveat: Coastal officials say that tolls can’t be assessed on the existing free routes.
The Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) voted unanimously Wednesday to approach Gov. Kay Ivey’s office asking her and other state officials to join them in exploring I-10 bridge options.
