BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) The city of Brockton will be naming a street in honor of middleweight boxing champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
The Brockton Enterprise reports the Brockton City Council unanimously approved a proposal Monday night to name a street, being constructed between Main and Montello Streets, as Marvin Hagler Drive.
The new street will intersect with Petronelli Way, where a gym that Hagler trained at was located. The gym was owned by brothers Pat and Goody Petronelli, who trained and managed Hagler.
Hagler died last month at the age of 66. He was the undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 to 1987. He and his family moved to Brockton in the 1960s.
On Monday night, the order was unanimously approved by the city council. It s the council s intent to honor Mr. Hagler s boxing achievements and status as a Brockton icon, Thompson said.
The councilor said it s not common for the council to name new streets as he learned from the city clerk s office that it had been about 17 years since the council last did so.
Hagler, who was 62-3-2 with 52 knockouts in his career and the undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 to April 6, 1987, died at the age of 66 in March. Hagler was born in Newark, New Jersey, and moved with his family to Brockton in the late 1960s. Some of his family members still live in Brockton today.

There are going to be some terrible horror stories coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic when itâs over.
Especially for Black people in America who have already lost over a million small businesses and 70,000 lives! A disproportionately high number of over 500,000 lives have been lost in this country, including over 30,000 lives lost here in California alone!
How is it that the so-called dark, backward, âthird worldâ continent of Africa has lost only 25,000 lives?! How is it that the whole continent of Africa has lost fewer lives than the âprogressiveâ state of California?!
