Laguna Beach USD launches plan to shore-up student achievement after COVID-19 By Breeana Greenberg, Special to the Independent The Laguna Beach Unified School District has developed a plan to accelerate learning after some parents aired concerns about a slump in student achievement amidst online and hybrid learning.  Chad Mabery, assistant superintendent of instructional services, recently briefed the school board on an 18-month plan “based on a lot of the things we’ve seen this last year in the pandemic.” The plan takes on four forms: assessment of student learning, in-class support and intervention, outside-of-class support and intervention, and staff training and collaborative planning.

April 26, 2021 •  Shutterstock (TNS) Seven Beaufort County schools are getting new science and technology programs in 2022-23 thanks to a nearly $13 million federal grant, district officials announced. The district was chosen by the U.S. Department of Education to receive $12.8 million Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant, which will be distributed over the next five years. Students from across the county will be able to apply to attend these schools through the district s school choice system to participate in the magnet programs, Chief Instructional Services Officer Mary Stratos said Thursday.

The finalists were among 64 applicants from across the nation. The four finalists, in alphabetical order, are Dr. Alessandro Anzalone of Tampa, Fla.; Dr. Jermaine Ford of Lafayette, La.; Dr. J. Gregory Hodges of Ridgeway; and Dr. Tanjula Petty of Pike Road, Ala.

From staff reports United Way of Henderson County announced the recipients of distinguished awards to community leaders and corporate giving partners at its virtual Annual United Way Celebration Wednesday. While we couldn’t gather in person this year, we wanted to celebrate the great things that support from individuals and companies made possible last year amid an ongoing pandemic,” Executive Director Denise Cumbee Long said in a news release.  Three awards were presented to individuals receiving special recognition. The Rob and Ginger Cranford Community Service Award is presented annually to an individual or couple who exemplify the extraordinary community service that Rob and Ginger Cranford demonstrated throughout their lives.
