Steven Jerome Hathaway

Steven Jerome Hathaway, age 69 passed away on March 31, 2001 in Knoxville TN. following an extended illness. Steve was born on May 2, 1951, in Elizabethton TN, to the late Alma Phillips Hathaway and Raymond Jerome Hathaway. He graduated from Science Hill High School, Johnson City TN in 1969 and subsequently served in the US Army. He later earned an Engineering Degree from Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville TN and continued to work in this field until his retirement. Steve is survived by his wife Gail Bryant Hathaway, son Andrew Hathaway, his wife Meagan Hathaway, grandson Hollace Hathaway, and brother Mitchell Hathaway. Steve was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a kind and considerate friend.

May 14, 1869: The Union Flag reported, “In this place on the 11th inst., Mrs. Dennis, aged 35 yrs. Daughter of Dr. J.C. Cossen, deceased.” As used here, “inst”, was a term used to mean “In the same month”, so this meant that Mrs. Dennis had passed away on May 11, 1869. The Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way at the time. May 14, 1903: The Chattanooga News, with a Johnson City dateline, reported on a near-riot in Johnson City. “Johnson City has had a narrow escape from a serious riot. The trouble originated in a fight on the midway. ‘Buss’ Hale, a well known character of this place, became involved in a difficulty with Joseph A. Sanborn, an attaché of one of the carnival shows. As a result Hale stabbed the showman, the knife inflicting a painful wound near the heart which is about four inches long and two inches deep.”

Rocky Lee Shew

Rocky was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was born September 4, 1960. Rocky graduated from Science Hill High School, and worked as an electrician for many years. He enjoyed playing golf, college football, camping, ATV riding, and was a master of the grill. Rocky was witty, charming, dependable, and the world was a better place because he was in it. He was the first to drop everything and help anyone at a moment’s notice. Rocky Lee Shew touched so many lives, and was a dear friend to all. He was preceded in death by father and stepmother, Donald and Brenda Shew, and beloved dog Lily.
